Paleo Diet and Calcium Intake

This is an important issue if you are concerned about calcium, bone health and are considering following a hard core paleo diet where dairy is eliminated. Calcium is important to a degree, but only in conjunction with other minerals, especially magnesium and potassium. We have been brain washed into thinking that getting enough calcium is the end all and be all of a healthy body and that dairy is the best source for that calcium. Both are incorrect. In fact too much calcium is harmful for the bones since it inhibits the absorption of magnesium. Dairy is a poor source of calcium since it is in a form that is unavailable for us to use.ᅠ

Since switching to the Paleo diet and giving up dairy products, particularly milk itself, I get a lot of questions about where I get my calcium from.

If you are concerned about your bone health have your vitamin D levels checked. Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is much more important for bone health. To learn more about Vitamin D3 visit www.vitamindcouncil.org. You will find vitamin D testing kits on that site.ᅠ
